This is Fred and Frank.
We found them Sunday night under my mom's pine tree. They are tree squirrels that are no more than a couple days old. We found Frank first (he is the bigger one) and about an hour or so later we found Fred. We think that they were pushed out of their nest and their mama did not want them, she never came to take them back to their nest. We left them as long as we dared to, to give the mama a chance to rescue them before we brought them in from the cold so they would not die.
None of us wanted to leave them outside in the cold because we knew they would die. So I brought them in and Cameron went and got some pedialite (which was recommended to rehydrate them) and an eye dropper so we could feed them. It is not everyday you get to feed a baby squirrel, I loved it!
We found later in the evening that all the places that could potentially help were closed. We always wanted a pet squirrel and now we had two! Cameron and I brought them home and they slept in our room with us in a tuperware container on a heating pad. Needless to say, we did not sleep much. One of them decided to have a little freak out in the middle of the night and scared us both! I woke up about every two hours to check on them and give them a drink, I was very paranoid that they would not make it through the night.
To our pleasant surprise they made it through the night. We both wanted to keep them but it is against the law to own pet squirrels in Utah and we don't really know how or have the time to take care of them properly. In the morning my mom started making phone calls to places that she thought might take the in and nowhere in Logan could take care of them. We went to Ogden to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center and they were happy to take them in! She said that they looked very healthy and would be just fine! I may or may not have cried when we got back to the car.
As a side note to this story, I have an incredible husband!!! He not only went and bought everything for the squirrels and sacrificing his sleep, with me taking care of the squirrels in our room, he took time off work to drive to Ogden with me. Then after, to help cheer me up he bought me a 20 gauge Stoeger over under shot gun! (It is also an early birthday present :) I love him very, very much!!!
